CONNECTICUT BLUE STAR MOTHERS
'Let's Begin!'
Greetings from the Blue Star Mothers that are in Connecticut!!! We are a group of moms who are anxiously awaiting our children's return from points of deployment throughout the world. My name is Rev. Lin McGee and I have been interested in the Blue Star Mother's organization since I first learned of it when my sons we called into active duty several years ago. I followed the Blue Star Mother's activities and was delighted to see what they were doing for the troops and for one another while their children were deployed. As my children have become more involved in the war for freedom, I have also become more involved and interested in Blue Star Mothers and all that it stands for. Realizing that there was not a Chapter for the National Organization within Connecticut and also realizing how much of a need there was for one, in honor of my sons JamesPeter Matthews and Daniel Matthews and their committed and long standing service to our country, I have established and am presently organizing with other moms the 'Connecticut Blue Star Mothers', a Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.
We know that mothers have many needs while their children are serving in a time of war. Many needs that must be met in different ways. No one can understand the heart of a mother who has a child serving except another mother! My hope for the Connecticut Blue Star Mothers is that we will be able to connect and support each other in the ways that we cannot find in the outside world. Courage is contageous and we need to uphold one another as we support our troops!
Please consider joining the Connecticut Blue Star Mothers if you are a mom who has someone who is serving in the United States Military or if you are a mom who has had someone serving in the United States Military. Requirements? Just a wish to support and care for our troops, our veterans, and one another. What does that mean exactly? It means that as a group of caring and responsible women we will seek ways to support one another, the troops, and the veterans according to our capabilities and interests. Do you knit? Perhaps you could make lap blankets for our veterans? Do you cook? Perhaps you could make cookies to send to the troops? Are you shut in? Perhaps you could send cards or start a prayers team? WE NEED EACH MOM!!! --And-- EVERY MOM COUNTS!!!
Also -- we need dads, spouses, sisters, brothers, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends of troops and veterans who would like to be Associate Members of the team!! Please contact me or view the Blue Star Mother's national website for more information at www.BlueStarMothers.org
Thus far, The Connecticut Blue Star Mothers have organized informational materials for the Chapter and have begun to get that out to veteran's organizations, the printed news media, and also public television. We have been a part of two of this year's Veteran's Day Parades and/or events -- and we have also been a part of the Support Our Soldiers event in Terryville, CT, to put together packages to send to the troops. We are looking forward to being involved in many more activities that will benefit our military troops and our veterans.
There are so many more things we can do! Your ideas, interests, skills, and needs will direct the formation and activities of our group. Each mother and each associate member is important to this group!! If possible, please consider filling an official position on the team too. Our History / Our Banner
Chapter #7 officially came into its own on November 18, 2005
Since its creation, this chapter's moms have diligently labored to support our troops and their families. Through the collective effort of its members, the group has steadily expanded its reach and has continuously seized every opportunity to create a much needed awareness about our soldiers' plights, their sacrifices, and their bravery.
Seven months after its creation, the essential pledge guiding the actions of the group is to convey to our soldiers, in any way possible, the depth of our everlasting gratefulness and our commitment to tirelessly labor towards improving their lives' conditions and their safety.
Among the many activities that enthusiastically supported the advancement of the groups’ causes and consistently helped increased awareness we count:
- The recruitment of numerous speakers such as, Veterans Counselors, Patriotic Children, Military Personnel
- Adopting individual soldiers and units stationed overseas
- Welcoming soldiers returning from overseas at Sacramento International Airport, with Patriots Guard Riders in attendance
- Giving speeches at Synagogues, Churches, Schools, Military facilities and at the Placer County Council, Navy League
- Supporting one of our Blue Star Mother turning Gold
- Collecting and distributing toys for needy military children
- Soliciting and collecting over 1500 Christmas Cards addressed to soldiers and over 1000 Valentines cards, and sending them to our troops
- Accepting and distributing items privately donated
- Enlisting the assistance of military support groups
- Connecting business with soldiers’ families in need
- Promoting group’s existence and purpose at the opening of a new Home Depot
- Participating in American Legion and Roseville Veterans Organizations’ events
- Promoting awareness at Mather Base Air Show, in Rancho Cordova
- Meeting with representatives of Armed Forces at the Military Entrance Processing Station to advocate for the group’s causes and enlisting their assistance
- Actively supporting Blue Stars Moms East Bay Chapter 101 in the introduction of “Dignity for Funerals Act of 2006”
- Participating as a Blue Star Moms representatives in public events such as, Inauguration of Roseville Veterans’ memorial park in Roseville, Capitol to Capitol bike ride for Memorial Day, Dedication Ceremony for Veterans Memorial Plaza at Mather Hospital
- Receiving National Guard Historians
- Interviewing with representatives of English and Spanish TV stations
- Assisting public at large in the sending of care packages
- Sending care packages to our troop when collected funds allow it
- Conducting fundraisers such as, recycling of old cell phones and used inkjet printer cartridges
- Actively and continuously seeking to recruit new members for the group
In the recognition of our group’s mission we thrive. For the sake of our defenders of freedom, our efforts and our commitment will not wave. We endeavor to remain a dynamic presence, a reminder to our citizens to reach out to their communities and to keep our soldiers in their thoughts and always in their hearts.
United in support of our troops!
